Behaviour Policy

 

Introduction

 

Part of growing up is about learning what is acceptable and unacceptable and gradually taking responsibility for one’s own behaviour.  Our approach to discipline is to encourage and celebrate good behaviour and positive achievements in all children.

 

At St Brigid’s effective teaching and learning takes place within a calm working environment.  All staff are involved and this ensures that a consistent and collective response is evident throughout the school.

 

Principles.

 

  • To produce an environment where everyone and especially children feel safe, secure and respected, enabling children to develop a sense of self worth and a respect and tolerance for others.

  • To develop and enhance pupils’ self-esteem, and make their experience at school a positive one.

     

    Purpose.

     

  • St Brigid’s endeavours to provide a supportive, orderly, learning environment for all of our pupils to ensure that effective learning takes place.

     

    Practices.

     

  • Promote positive behaviour throughout the school based on a praise / reward system.

  • Appropriate provision is made to support individual children and groups where needed.

  • Effective communication between parents, pupils and staff is a core element of practices.

     

    Inappropriate behaviour

    Inappropriate behaviour includes that which:

  • Impacts on the right of staff and pupils to a safe, orderly and calm learning environment;

  • Disrupts the day to day running of the class and/or the school;

  • Interferes with the pupil’s own and/or other pupils’ learning;

  • Is more frequent, intense or of a longer duration than the class teacher or the school staff can manage within their resources;

  • Is not resolved by the range of interventions used by the school to address challenging behaviour.

Examples include:

  • Aggressive behaviour (punching, kicking, biting, scratching, pushing), Verbal abuse and threatening behaviour.

  • Abusive or threatening language used towards staff or pupils.

  • Disruptive behaviour (shouting, screaming, tantrums, non co-operation, running away).

  • Destructive behaviour (destruction of personal or school property, resources and the environment).

  • Self-Injury (head banging, cutting/nipping self, pulling own hair).

School Code of Conduct.

 

At St Brigid’s Primary School:

 

  • We will work hard and try our best.

  • We listen to others when they speak.

  • We will be honest and tell the truth.

  • We will not hurt others.

  • We will wear our full school uniform with pride.

  • We will respect school property and that of others.


    Classroom Code of Conduct – each teacher works with his/her pupils to produce a classroom code of conduct.  This will be prominently displayed in the classroom.

     

    Canteen Code of Conduct – is to encourage a calm and positive atmosphere and is displayed in the canteen.

     

    Playground Code of Conduct – is to positive behaviour and is displayed in the entrance hall and in each classroom.


    Rewards and Recognition.


    The class teacher will make every effort to reinforce good behaviour and a sense of achievement within their classrooms.  A range of strategies are used to encourage positive behaviour.  Praise can be given in formal and informal ways, in public or in private.

  • A quiet word of encouragement.

  • A positive written comment in a book.

  • A public word of praise in front of the child’s class or in assembly.

  • Pupil of the Week / Pupil of the Term award and Principal’s award/class of term.

  • A visit to another member of staff, the Vice Principal or Principal for commendation or certificate.

  • Assembly/class prize giving.

  • Classroom strategies to support positive work/behaviour.

  • Use of the end of year school report to comment on behaviour and general attitudes.

 

Appendix 1

 

Learning Support Class / Autistic Class.

 

Use of Positive Handling Techniques.

 

Staff may feel that a child is at risk of harming themselves or others and therefore positive handling techniques as outlined on the Team Teach Programme will be used.  The staff in both classes have been trained in this programme.  The training programme will be updated bi-annually.  Risk assessments and/or Behaviour Intervention Plans for individual pupils will be put in place if required.  Procedures and practices relating to this policy are available to parents within the Autistic Class and Learning Support Classes.
