New Initiatives and Successes
Accelerated Reading Programme.
We are in the third year of embedding and developing the Accelerated Reading Programme. All classes from year three to seven are now fully involved in reading their favourite books and completing the quiz which gives them a sense of achievement. They are rewarded with a range of prizes linked to the number of points they have built up over time.
In the past three years we have invested £15,000 in books and prizes.
We would like to thank Mrs M Bonner, Miss O McNamara and Mrs S McClean for the time and energy they have invested in making this programme so successful.
Fionn is our very first Word Millionaire! Now he has read a total of 1,811,918 words. Fionn received a certificate and a £20 voucher to spend in the Bowling Alley. Well done Fionn! We are looking forward to many more children becoming part of the Word Millionaire Club.
We have removed all the old books from our school library and restocked with all books purchased linked to the Accelerated Reading Programme. We have purchased £6,000 worth of books with an emphasis on factual books, as the Accelerated Reading Programme has focused on fiction. We have ordered a range of cushions and mats to compliment the new furniture already purchased.
All classes from Nursery to Tear Seven have dedicated library time to encourage and motivate all pupils.
Ms Josie Cusack and her team from the Education Authority Library Services has been instrumental in supporting us with this task. The Library was formally opened by Ms Cusack on Wednesday 21 October 2015.
Curriculum Priorities 2015 – 2016
Developing Science for the Future.
The teaching staff of St Brigid’s are currently developing the Science Curriculum in partnership with S.T.E.M (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics).
The S.T.E.M Team, led by Mrs Roisin Crawford, are planning, preparing and delivering Science lessons by working alongside the class teachers in their classrooms. This is taking place each half term throughout the 2015/2016 school year. Please take time to talk to your children about the science investigations they are experiencing. We wish to encourage and develop their Science skills and give opportunities for their future in this curriculum area.
